BROCKTON —

Linda Balzotti said she’s not taking a day off after being elected the city’s first female mayor on Tuesday — at least not yet.

“I will be around for the remainder of this week, and most of next week,” she said in a phone interview Wednesday. “I do hope to go away next weekend, to re-energize and get rest away from the phones.”

Balzotti said she got four hours of sleep after the election win Tuesday, and the phone started ringing at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. She said she attended an event at the Council on Aging building and came back to find her answering machine full.

“The main line has been ringing, the e-mails have been crazy — I couldn’t keep up,” she said.

Balzotti, a city councilor for 12 years, said she will soon start working to put together a transition team to prepare for taking over the mayor’s office in January.

“In the next couple of days I’m going to start to make a list of some individuals who I hope will help me, and ask for their participation,” she said.

Balzotti defeated two-term incumbent Mayor James E. Harrington on Tuesday, with 56 percent of the vote to 43 percent for Harrington.
